100 Years and Counting: Greenville Businesses Withstanding the Test of Time

A Century of Service and Success

Imagine it: 100 years. The United States, in the middle of the Roaring Twenties, and two contenders born – actor Marlon Brando and President George H.W. Bush. Amid the whirlwind of historic events, some Greenville businesses stood firmly, many family-owned, thriving and continually serving the community. These pillars of entrepreneurship have endured the Great Depression, World War II, and a world of change and economic upheaval.

Stalwarts of Greenville Economy

Among these establishments, Hale’s Jewelers holds a special place as it opened its doors in 1856 as a watch shop on Main Street. Over the years, it has relocated multiple times, yet its commitment to the community has remained consistent. Lecian Lee, the President, shared, “We’ve kind of seen the small community grow into the metropolis it is today. The people of Greenville have been also supportive of us.”

Mackey Mortuary first opened in 1872 and Thomas McAfee Funeral Home dates back to 1913, both proudly serving the community for over a century. Today, they offer numerous services from multiple locations, maintaining their tradition of community service and support.

Legacy of Law Firms

Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, P.A., can trace its history back to 1887. The firm has undergone numerous mergers and expansions over the years. Alongside it, Wyche, P.A., which began in 1921, has played a crucial part in developing modern downtown Greenville. The firm is also known for its contributions to conservations through the Natureland Trust.

Miscellaneous Ventures

Other businesses, such as V.M. Manning, Smith Dray Lines, League Manufacturing, and The Furman Co., have shaped the economic landscape in Greenville with their contributions in unique ways throughout their century-old history.

Duke’s Mayonnaise, born in 1917, has become an essential part of Southern cuisine. Owned by C.F. Sauer, the mayonnaise is still produced at its plant near Mauldin. Smith & James, a men’s fashion store, opened its doors in 1916, and today operates from multiple locations.

Asserting its presence in the city since 1888, The Furman Co. shaped the way for local development and commercial real estate. Gillespie Marble & Granite Works finds its roots in 1897 and still provides unique marble and brass memorials.

Contributing to Greenville’s Fabric for Over a Century

These institutions reflect generations of hard work, dedication, and a strong commitment to serving and being part of Greenville’s community. By successfully meeting their customer’s needs and adapting to changes over the decades, these businesses have proven their longevity and resilience over 100+ years.
